We heard that Google would be launching the Street View to Sri Lanka for the first time towards the end of late 2014. Since then, we have only had small teases about this groundbreaking technology. All we got a look at were the iconic Google Street View cars and we were still on our toes awaiting the news of the launch. However, earlier this year, we got the much anticipated update.
DotCom Systems became the very first local Street View trusted photographers to create the breathtaking virtual tours of local Sri Lankan businesses. Although the update was only a minor announcement, we still didn’t have news of Google Street View and finally, a few months later, Google Street View became available in Sri Lanka.
Google has its unique Street View cars travel through virtually every road in Sri Lanka through a period of about two years and over this period, these special cars collected a wide range of panoramic pictures of Sri Lanka’s best locations. These pictures were then collected together to create a spectacular virtual tour of Sri Lanka which could be accessed easily through Google Maps. All you have to do in order to access Street View is to drag the tiny yellow stick figure on the bottom of the screen and gain access to a street view mapped road.
Approximately 90% of Sri Lanka has been covered by Street View and the Sri Lankan Street View team has been incredibly busy in producing this wonderful and much anticipated virtual tour of Sri Lanka. Thanks to Google Street View, you can now take a virtual tour of practically any place before visiting it. This could be anything- from the stunning views at the Ella rocks to the pristine beaches of Trincomalee and just about everything else in between, you can virtually travel more than 50,000 km on Google Maps Street View.
Sri Lanka only has a few certified Google Street View trusted photographers and these four individuals- namely, Athif Nazeer, Mohamed Ziyan, Jaufer Mohamed and Fasha Hussain from DotCom Systems- are the only people in Sri Lanka who can create virtual tours for Google Street Business View. They represented Sri Lanka at the Google Street View Trusted Elite Members MeetUp 2016 which was held in Singapore. The team’s virtual tour of Aliya Resort & Spa is said to be one of the very best virtual tours in the South-East Asian region and they have created virtual tours for more than 60 businesses as of date.
Google Street View has proved to be a huge success in Sri Lanka and we can expect this pioneering initiative to go a long way in the future.
