How Google Plans to Reach India’s 1.3 billion population

Google took another giant step in its mission to find the next billion users in India. The company announced improvements and expansion of Google Translate to better serve the non-English speaking users in India. There’s a good reason behind this move. There are more non-English speaking users online in the country than English speaking users, Google said, referring to a new study it co-authored with KPMG.

At a Google press meeting in New Delhi, the Vice President of South East Asia and India mentioned that the gap will broaden in the next four years, as he announced new features in Google Translate. Google’s Translate service, which uses the company’s neural machine translation technology, now supports nine Indian languages — Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Punjabi, Malayalam, and Kannada.

Google is also bringing neural machine translation to Chrome’s new web browser’s auto-translate functionality. In a demonstration, a Google executive showed texts on Google News translating from English to Hindi in real time. Another new introduction was that the Google search is also getting a built-in Hindi dictionary.

Talking about translation, Google said that the marquee translation feature will also work across Google Maps and Google Search, allowing people in the country to look and read reviews, listings, excerpts, etc in their preferred languages. Furthermore, Google’s mobile keyboard app Gboard, now supports nearly two dozen Indian languages as well.
