HTTPS and why it’s becoming increasingly important to pay attention to it

With the new trend of websites switching to HTTPS and based on what’s ranking in Google, it is expected that 70% of the page one results will be HTTPS by the end of this year. According to a research, half of the first page results on Google show HTTPS URLs and this trend is rapidly rising from the 30% of results we saw in July 2016.

Google recently said that they don’t have any plans of boosting the HTTPS ranking signal although they did think of doing so a few months before. Keyword research and tracking tools have confirmed that about 50% of HTTPS URLs are ranked on the very first page of Google.

So what exactly is HTTPS?

During the process of web development and design, it’s extremely important to offer a good online experience and this involves a trusted third party and good encryption. HTTPS, is a secure http, which was first developed in order to permit authorization and secure transactions. The reason for this is that confidential information has to be secure to prevent unauthorized access. HTTPS, therefore, offers a better layer of security because it established a connection to a server on a standard port. HTTPS offers balance in how users visually see your site and also offers additional security when exchanging data.

Why does Google prefer HTTPS?

It goes without saying that Google prefers websites that are certified and trusted because it gives users the guarantee that the site will encrypt their information for added security. HTTPS websites have a clear ranking advantage over other sites, which is something SEO experts use during Search Engine Optimization.

The benefits of data sent using HTTPS is that is offers three main layers of protection:

  • Encryption: Exchanged data is encrypted to keep it secure
  • Data Integrity: Data cannot be corrupted or modified without detection
  • Authentication: Users communicate with the intended site

It’s clear that HTTPS offers an advantage in terms of Google rankings but there are some great SEO benefits involved as well. It helps to increase rankings and when traffic passes to an HTTPS website, the secure referral information is preserved. Additionally, HTTPS adds security and privacy to your website in several ways.
