Serious malfunctioning of Facebook’s social sharing features on Monday

Several users of Facebook experienced a glitch with the social sharing features on Facebook on Monday morning. It is said that a technical problem stopped people from posting articles through the share buttons available on many websites, which also include some top sites such as Reuters, The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg.

A spokesperson for Facebook explained that the technical issues were due to a spam filter. While the filter is designed in order to stop the malware from spreading on social media platforms, the issue produced a “Message Failed” dialog box for people who were looking to share legitimate content on Monday. The issue however was encountered when sharing from an outside website and sharing links directly on Facebook still worked normally.

According to the Facebook Help Guide, a block could generally last for a few hours or even up to a few days and that a company could lift the block for any reason. By Monday afternoon, the issue was resolved and Facebook sharing was back to normal. However, there have been questions as to how this would have happened.

This technical problem with social sharing on Facebook comes after many Facebook fails that have taken place in the course of the past months. These include debates over unnecessary censorship and Trending topics on Facebook.
